Using Thumb Cuffs
A good pair of thumb cuffs used properly will almost be impossible to escape from. You don't want to squeeze the cuffs too tight that it cuts of circulation, but you want to keep it tight enough so there is no flexible movement and will be uncomfortable when trying to pull your thumb out of them.
When putting thumb cuffs on someone, you want to keep the keyhole facing inside towards the body of the person. This places the keyhole on the opposite side of the fingers so they won't be able to use their fingers to pick the lock.
Another tip is to make sure the person's thumbs are not bent when locking on the cuffs. This is a known trick among escape artists to fatten their thumbs by flexing the tendon in their thumbs so they can slip out of the cuffs later. You want to lock the cuffs on their thumbs with the thumbs straight and relaxed.
